Alberta will launch its regulated online gambling market on July 13, with responsible gaming controls active from the first day. Licensed online casinos and sportsbooks must support a centralized self-exclusion program, prevent underage gambling and offer tools that help players control their activity.
Good to Know
Unlike Ontario, Alberta will not add centralized self-exclusion several years after opening its competitive market. Ontario launched private online gambling in 2022 and introduced its central system in May 2026. Alberta will begin with the tool already available.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, known as AGLC, has published standards covering player verification, responsible gambling support and access for minors. Alberta first introduced the internet gaming requirements in January.
The Alberta iGaming Corporation, known as AiGC, has also partnered with the Responsible Gambling Council. Every approved online gambling operator must earn RG Check accreditation.
“By requiring RG Check accreditation, we’re ensuring that every iGaming operator in our market has demonstrated their commitment to player safety through independent verification of their responsible gambling programs,” AiGC CEO Dan Keene said.
RG Check reviews governance, marketing, employee training and player safeguards. The Responsible Gambling Council will then carry out regular assessments. Operators must retain accreditation to remain eligible for the Alberta regulated gambling market.
Meanwhile, each licensed betting site must clearly promote the Alberta self-exclusion program and provide direct access from its platform. The digital service includes guidance, support resources and frequently asked questions.
Self-exclusion also affects open bets. When a player enters the program before an eligible futures wager settles, the operator must void the bet and return the qualifying stake.
AGLC has modernized the program as a central digital service available around the clock. The structure gives Alberta players one route to block access rather than requiring separate requests across several Alberta online casino and sports betting platforms.
