Australia will tighten gambling advertising rules from January 1, 2027, with new limits across TV, radio, online platforms, sports venues, and team uniforms. The Albanese government said the package is aimed at reducing gambling harm, especially for children.
Good to Know
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the package is “The most significant reform on gambling that has ever been implemented” in Australia. He also said the goal is to let adults bet while making sure children are not surrounded by betting ads.
Under the new rules, gambling ads will be banned in sports venues and on the jerseys of players and officials. TV ads will be capped at three per hour between 6 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., while live sports broadcasts in that same window will carry none at all. Radio ads will also be blocked during school drop-off and pick-up times on weekdays.
The package also reaches digital platforms. Gambling ads online will be blocked unless the user is at least 18 and has logged into a verified betting account on that device. People will still be able to opt out. The government also said it will step up action against illegal offshore betting sites and may ban some gaming apps that resemble casino machines.
The changes follow years of pressure for tighter rules. Even so, some reform advocates say the package does not go far enough because it stops short of a full ban. The government is due to table its formal response to the Murphy report in Parliament on May 12.
