Neymar is back in the spotlight, but not for anything he did on the pitch. The Santos forward reportedly spent his day off in a long online poker session after being left out of the match against Cruzeiro for workload management.
Good to Know
The football side of the story is pretty simple. Santos did not use Neymar against Cruzeiro, and the club explanation centered on physical management rather than a fresh injury. Reports around the match said the coaching staff wanted to avoid extra risk after a heavy run of games.
What followed got far more attention. Portal LeoDias reported that Neymar spent around 24 hours playing online poker from Friday through Sunday. The same report said he entered a $5,000 tournament and re entered at least three times, taking his buy in to at least $20,000. While that was going on, Santos played out a 0 0 draw against Cruzeiro.
That report quickly fed the wider debate around Neymar and Santos. Portal LeoDias said the episode raised questions about how committed he is to the club, especially because some expected him to remain closer to the squad even if he was being rested.
Neymar did not exactly deny the poker part. In a post referenced by Brazilian media, he said the day began with training and a cinema trip with family, then added that there was “also a little bit of poker on the cell phone,” ending with a laughing emoji.
For poker fans, none of it is shocking. Neymar has long been tied to the game and previously served as a PokerStars ambassador. Still, the timing turned a routine rest day into another talking point around one of the biggest names in Brazilian football.
His love for poker has led to some controversy in the past. Back in 2023 instead of celebrating the Ligue 1 win with his teammates at Paris SG, Neymar opted to spend the entire night playing poker in Monaco instead.
