Illinois Lottery has confirmed that the $536 million Mega Millions jackpot from the March 10 drawing has now been claimed. The winner bought the ticket online, chose to stay anonymous, and became the first Mega Millions jackpot claimant of 2026.
Good to Know
Instead of buying at a store, the winner purchased the Mega Millions ticket online and later claimed the prize under the nickname “Lucky Lady.” According to Illinois Lottery, that made it the first Mega Millions jackpot claimed in 2026 and one of the biggest online lottery wins ever seen in the country. The only bigger online lottery prize still on record is a $552 million Mega Millions jackpot from June 2024, also won by an Illinois Lottery player.
What makes the story even better is how close she came to missing it.
“I didn’t even plan to play that day—I had actually tried to buy a ticket online a week earlier, but I forgot to finalize the purchase,” the winner said with a laugh. “I even joked with my boss that day, saying, ‘It wasn’t meant to go through.’”
When she returned for the March 10 drawing, she used Quick Pick, reshuffled the numbers a few times, and then stopped when one number stood out.
“Once I saw my favorite number, 16, I stuck with it,” said the winner.
Those numbers ended up being the jackpot combination. Illinois Lottery said “Lucky Lady” matched 16, 21, 30, 35, 65, and Mega Ball 7 to land the full $536 million prize.
Even after getting an email and app notification, the winner said the moment did not feel real right away.
“I couldn’t believe it. I was shaking and telling myself, ‘This can’t be real,’” she said. “I had my daughter call one of the claim centers to confirm, but it still feels unreal.”
Illinois Lottery said the win is the fifth Mega Millions jackpot claimed by a player from Illinois in nearly five years. That kind of streak has helped keep Illinois near the center of major U.S. lottery stories, especially in the online lottery space.
The winner also shared a few family plans for the money, and they are pretty relatable.
“I’ve always dreamed of buying a new family house with a swimming pool,” she shared. “We’re also planning a family meeting soon, so a cruise or maybe even a trip to Vegas could definitely be on the table.”
There was also a public benefit during the jackpot roll period. Illinois Lottery said that from December 5, 2025, through the run-up to the jackpot, more than $34 million in ticket sales generated over $13 million for the Common School Fund, which supports K-12 education in Illinois. Mega Millions tickets cost $5 and come with a random multiplier that can boost non-jackpot prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or 10X. At the time of the announcement, the next Friday drawing carried an estimated $50 million jackpot.
