A new study of the Swedish gambling market shows that online betting and casino gaming remain widely used across the country. The research comes from the 2025 edition of Casinofeber research project known as Casinotempen, which examines participation levels and player behaviour in the regulated Swedish gambling sector.
Good to Know
The survey ran from July 3 to July 17, 2025, screening 3,463 respondents before focusing on 1,004 people who actively gamble online. The final group included 501 casino players and 503 sports betting players, with results weighted according to gender and age.
Findings show that online betting has a slightly larger reach than online casino play in Sweden. Around one in five Swedes take part in sports betting, while nearly one in six participate in online casino gaming.
Online casino players tend to be slightly younger. The typical age falls between 39 and 42, while betting players average 42 to 49 years old. Employment levels remain high in both groups, with about two thirds working full time.
Income levels for casino players most commonly fall between 30,000 and 40,000 Swedish crowns per month, indicating participation across middle income households.
Brand awareness also appeared strong among Swedish players. LeoVegas recorded the highest recognition at 69 percent, followed by operators such as bet365, Unibet, and Betsson. Among casinos rated by users, Expekt received the highest average score at 3.84.
Sports betting participation shows a slightly different profile. Betting players are 62 percent men, and the group shows higher levels of education compared with casino players.
Football stands as the most popular betting market by a wide margin. 63 percent of bettors wager on football, followed by horse racing at 30 percent and ice hockey at 29 percent.
Brand recognition among sportsbooks is led by Svenska Spel, with 86 percent awareness and 64 percent reporting that they have placed bets through the platform. Other widely recognised operators include ATG and Unibet.
Spending levels remain modest for most bettors. The most common monthly betting amount falls below 99 SEK, although 10 percent spend more than 1,000 SEK each month. Women tend to wager less, while men more often fall into the 200 to 999 SEK monthly range.
Frequency of betting varies widely. About 24 percent of bettors place wagers once per week, while 7 percent gamble almost daily. Live betting remains less common, with 45 percent saying they sometimes place live bets but only 6 percent doing so regularly.
The survey also examined responsible gambling indicators. Most respondents said they had never borrowed money to gamble. Among casino players, 84 percent reported never borrowing, although 28 percent of weekly players had borrowed money at least once. Among sports bettors, 93 percent reported never borrowing funds for gambling.
Awareness of Sweden national self exclusion tool Spelpaus remains high. Among casino players, 65 percent know about the system but have never used it, while 13 percent said they have used it previously or currently. Among betting players, 71 percent know about the service, although only 1 percent currently remain self excluded.
