A bomb threat tied to gambling losses triggered a swift law enforcement response near the Nevada California border. Casino security flagged the threat quickly, allowing officers to locate and arrest the suspect within hours.
Good to Know
Security staff at Harrah’s Casino contacted law enforcement around 9:50 p.m. local time after receiving a call that included a direct bomb threat.
The caller allegedly said:
“Yeah, I just lost over $20,000 at your stupid casino, and I am going to destroy it now. I am going to bomb it. This is a bomb threat.”
Authorities later identified the suspect as Seth Maybee from South Lake Tahoe.
Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department arrested Maybee at his residence around 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 6. The arrest came roughly four hours after the initial call.
Maybee now faces charges tied to making a bomb threat and terroristic threats. Authorities booked him into the El Dorado County Jail, where he remains while awaiting extradition to Douglas County for a court appearance.
Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley credited casino staff and police coordination for the quick outcome.
He said:
“I want to thank Harrah’s Casino for their quick reporting of this incident and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department for their assistance in the arrest of Maybee.”
Coverley also noted that law enforcement in the area treats casino threats with added care due to past history, including the Harvey’s Resort Hotel bombing on Aug. 26–27, 1980.
