The case includes payment processors Trustly and Yodlee, ID verification provider Jumio, and slots influencer Brian Christopher.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em><strong>Good to know<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>The lawsuit represents players not just in California, but also across 13 other states and Washington D.C.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino\/brian-christopher-slots-net-worth\/\">Brian Christopher<\/a>, a popular slots influencer, is accused of promoting VGW\u2019s unlicensed sweepstakes casinos.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>VGW already pulled out of more than a dozen states, including New York and New Jersey, due to new anti-sweeps bills.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2024 VGW Malta Ltd. agreed to <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino\/chumba-casino-class-action-lawsuit-what-you-need-to-know\/\">pay $11.75 million<\/a> to settle another class action suit in Kentucky.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>VGW runs online platforms like Chumba Casino and LuckyLand Slots, where users can purchase virtual currency to play games with the chance of winning cash prizes. The company frames these offerings as \u201csweepstakes,\u201d but critics argue they operate much like unlicensed online casinos.<\/p>\n<p>Filed on Wednesday, the suit argues that VGW\u2019s \u201cillegal gambling enterprise\u201d could not function without its California-based partners. The filing states:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cVGW\u2019s illegal gambling enterprise is not, and cannot be, operated by VGW alone. The illegal enterprise is only possible with the aid and assistance of multiple partners. VGW runs much or all of its operation through California, and has partnered with certain California-based individuals and companies, which provide essential gambling services to the VGW Casinos. Furthermore, Cristopher himself is involved with both <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/betmgm-forge-partnership-with-brian-christopher-slots\/\">BetMGM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/brian-christopher-teams-up-with-sportsgrid-for-new-casino-content-partnership\/\">SportsGrid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time influencers have been tied to legal action involving sweepstakes casinos. Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/ryan-seacrest-faces-lawsuit-over-chumba-casino-promotion\/\">Ryan Seacrest<\/a> was named in a similar California case alleging he promoted VGW\u2019s platforms.<\/p>\n<h2>VGW\u2019s Retreat From U.S. Markets<\/h2>\n<p>The company\u2019s legal troubles come as it continues to exit key states. In May, VGW left <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/vgw-ends-promotional-play-in-new-york-amid-legal-tensions\/\">New York<\/a> after lawmakers introduced bills directly targeting sweepstakes operators. It also shut down in <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/new-jersey-bill-pushes-vgw-to-shut-down-games\/\">New Jersey<\/a> ahead of a possible ban. In total, VGW has withdrawn from around a dozen states, including <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/vgw-luckyland-cease-order-issued\/\">Delaware<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/vgw-pulls-sweepstakes-casino-play-from-mississippi\/\">Mississippi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/regulatory-challenges-lead-vgw-to-exit-michigan-market\/\">Michigan<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/connecticut-resident-sues-vgw-over-alleged-illegal-gambling-operations\/\">Connecticut<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the operator hasn\u2019t left California.
