The long-running riverboat venue is set to shut down on July 29, clearing the way for a much-anticipated $185 million land-based casino, which is expected to open on August 11\u2014if final regulatory checks go through.<\/p>\n<p>For many in the area, the transition marks the end of an era that began back in the early 1990s, when Illinois\u2019 Riverboat Gambling Act first allowed gaming on water.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong><em>Good to know<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Riverboat casino will close permanently at 5:59 a.m. CDT on July 29.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>New land-based Hollywood Casino Joliet aims to open August 11.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Chips from the old site can be redeemed at the new one through the end of 2025.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>The existing riverboat, which opened as Empress Casino, was part of Illinois\u2019 original riverboat casino wave. Over time, changes to state law\u2014first in 1999, then again in 2019\u2014allowed operators to move onto land, leading to this shift.<\/p>\n<p>Until its final day, the riverboat will continue to run normal hours. Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis will bring Sorellina, a laid-back Italian eatery, to the property. The Boulevard Food &#038; Drink Hall will spotlight Chicagoland staples like Antique Taco, Pretty Cool Ice Cream, and Lucky Goat\u2014a burger concept from Stephanie Izard.
