The injunction, originally issued on May 26, came at the request of Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corp. (MBLL) and was part of a broader push by Canadian lottery groups to rein in unauthorized online gambling.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong><em>Good to know<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Bodog was <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/bodog-exits-manitoba-market\/\">ordered<\/a> to stop offering gambling services in Manitoba.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>The ruling followed a request from MBLL and the Canadian Lottery Coalition.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Bodog did not appear in court and has already restricted access in response.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<p>The full reasoning behind the decision was released a month later, on June 26. Court of King\u2019s Bench Justice Jeffrey Harris sided firmly with MBLL and said Bodog\u2019s illegal operations were causing <em>\u201cever-increasing and incalculable harm\u201d<\/em> to the lottery corporation.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBodog\u2019s ongoing operation of its illegal gambling platforms in Manitoba inflicts new and ever increasing and incalculable harm on MBLL each day,\u201d<\/em> Harris wrote. He also noted that the company being located offshore makes it \u201chighly unlikely\u201d that any monetary judgment against it could be enforced.<\/p>\n<p>Although Bodog has taken steps to limit its availability in Manitoba, Harris emphasized that the injunction was narrowly tailored. They called it a meaningful win in their ongoing effort to challenge offshore operators.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s legal gambling framework gives provinces exclusive authority under the Criminal Code to<em> \u201cconduct and manage\u201d<\/em> gambling. Offshore sportsbooks, even if regulated in another country, do not fall under that authority.<\/p>\n<p>Online betting through \u201cgrey market\u201d sites has been common in Canada for years, but provincial regulators are starting to push back more forcefully. Ontario\u2019s launch of a regulated <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino\/what-is-igaming\/\">iGaming<\/a> market in 2022 provided a legal path for private operators to enter the province under provincial rules.
