North Dakota lawmakers are reviewing a bill that could significantly alter the state\u2019s gambling regulations. Senate Bill 2224, currently under discussion, proposes eliminating the state\u2019s gaming commission and transferring all regulatory authority to the Attorney General\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

The Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly approved a \u201cdo-pass recommendation\u201d for SB 2224 with a 4-3 vote. Supporters argue the measure would streamline oversight and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy. Senator Janne Myrdal, who introduced the bill, emphasized the need to reassess the roles of various state commissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cGovernor Armstrong mentioned all the boards and commissions and things that we have in our state, and how we need to look at which ones are pivotal for the functioning of our government and which ones are not,\u201d<\/em> Myrdal stated during the committee meeting. She added that the proposal came from concerns that the current gaming commission, while diligent in its duties, might be an unnecessary regulatory step.<\/p>\n

Industry Pushback and Legislative Debate<\/h2>\n

Despite the bill\u2019s progress, the gaming industry has voiced strong opposition. Industry representatives argue that removing the commission would weaken oversight and grant excessive power to the Attorney General. Critics believe the change could impact transparency and accountability in gambling regulations.<\/p>\n
