Harry Yeremian, a former employee of MGM Grand Detroit, was fired for refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine, but a federal jury decided in his favor and awarded him $133,000. Yeremian, a 56-year-old Canton Catholic, refused the immunization, citing his religious convictions. His legal team contended that his case was a noteworthy instance of employment discrimination because he was the only worker sacked for refusing to get a vaccine.<\/p>\n

Back in 2021, MGM Grand Detroit implemented a strict vaccine mandate, prioritizing vaccinated employees to ensure workplace safety. However, Yeremian\u2019s refusal to comply led to his termination, despite the casino\u2019s acknowledgment of his religious objection. In a statement to Yeremian, the casino claimed his unvaccinated status posed \u201csignificant risks to the health and safety of guests, coworkers, and himself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Interestingly, not all MGM employees were required to get vaccinated. Around 20% of the workforce, primarily unionized staff protected by the National Labor Relations Act, remained unvaccinated. Yeremian, however, was singled out, prompting him to file a lawsuit in 2022.<\/p>\n
