The Macau gaming industry marked a promising recovery in October, with total gaming revenue climbing to MOP 20.8 billion ($2.6 billion). The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) reported that this figure reflects a 6.6% increase compared to the same month last year and a 20.5% rise from September\u2019s total.<\/p>\n

This surge sets October\u2019s numbers as the highest monthly gross gaming revenue (GGR) since the pandemic began, though it hasn\u2019t yet reached pre-pandemic levels. For perspective, January 2020 posted MOP 22.1 billion, the last time revenues surpassed October\u2019s levels. But October 2019\u2019s GGR was significantly higher at MOP 26.4 billion, which means current figures are still down 21.4% from pre-pandemic numbers.<\/p>\n

Cumulatively, Macau GGR for the year now stands at MOP 190.1 billion, which is 28.1% higher than the same period last year. Compared to cumulative revenue from September, October\u2019s cumulative GGR climbed by 12.3%.<\/p>\n

One major contributor to this improvement has been Golden Week, a key holiday period in China that traditionally attracts a spike in tourists to Macau. The first week of October brought an influx of visitors, strengthening the city\u2019s hospitality and gaming industries. Tourism numbers indeed rose in September, with visitor counts reaching 2,528,011, which is about 91.4% of September 2019\u2019s numbers. This rebound in foot traffic provides a strong base for sustained revenue growth as the year progresses.<\/p>\n
