A former blackjack<\/a> dealer at MGM National Harbor, Jamie Smith, has been indicted for allegedly conspiring with players to steal over $43,000 from the casino. The charges were announced on June 6 by Prince George\u2019s County State\u2019s Attorney, Aisha Braveboy.<\/p>\n

Surveillance Unveils the Conspiracy<\/h2>\n

Jamie Smith, 31, is accused of colluding with three players to cheat the casino back in October 2023. According to WTOP News, surveillance footage revealed Smith allowing the players to see her cards before making their betting decisions. She also permitted them to change their bets after the cards were dealt and failed to collect on losing bets, facilitating the thefts.<\/p>\n

An internal investigation by MGM, prompted by a review of surveillance tapes, uncovered the scheme, resulting in a loss of approximately $43,250 for the casino. This incident also impacts the broader community, as MGM and other Maryland casinos contribute to the state\u2019s Education Trust Fund, which supports public education.<\/p>\n

State\u2019s Attorney Aisha Braveboy emphasized the broader implications of such economic crimes. She remarked, \u201cWhen individuals steal from casinos, it takes away funds meant for public schools, thereby robbing children of their educational opportunities.\u201d<\/em> She also noted that this case is unique during her tenure, as most incidents at the casino involve more direct forms of theft or violence.<\/p>\n

Assistant State\u2019s Attorney Joel Patterson reiterated the seriousness of the crime, highlighting that it amounted to theft as Smith was entrusted with handling the casino\u2019s money. Smith faces charges of theft, conspiracy to commit theft, and embezzlement. If convicted, she could face up to ten years in prison. These charges reflect not only the theft of funds but also the breach of trust placed in her as a casino employee.<\/p>\n
