Poker fans do not often get to hear Patrik Antonius talk at length about his career, his mindset and the stories behind more than 25 years at the highest stakes.

Part of that comes from an old perception of Antonius as the quiet, observant player at the table. His early television appearances often showed a composed Antonius saying little while some of the biggest personalities in poker filled the conversation around him.

Antonius addressed that reputation and much more during the first episode of Broke Living with JRB, the new podcast from Jean Robert Bellande. He said people can still be stuck with an image of the younger Antonius from televised poker, when he rarely spoke.

Friends and players who know him today see a different side, he said. Antonius described himself as far more social around the table over the past 10 to 15 years.

He also offered a simpler explanation for why he stayed so quiet during some of those early broadcasts. Sitting with players such as Mike Matusow and Daniel Negreanu did not leave much room.

“They don’t let anyone else talk,” Antonius joked.

The long-form conversation therefore gave Antonius room to tell several stories that have rarely, if ever, been heard directly from him. One involved a $100,000 prop bet with Phil Ivey over the gender of his unborn child. Another went back to one of the worst online poker runs of his life, when his results on PokerStars became so bad that he briefly wondered whether something had happened to his account.

Antonius had been playing on PokerStars after Full Tilt Poker stopped operating. He had recently decided against signing with PokerStars and then experienced what he described as the worst run of his career.

The run became so difficult that Antonius sent his complete PokerStars hand history to a well-known poker figure for an independent look. According to Antonius, the analysis put the downswing among the worst 2% of bad runs.

Antonius admitted where his mind went at the time.

I kind of thought that they just took a piece and just rigged my account like I just I mean it was it was the worst run I’ve ever had.

He immediately made clear that he no longer believed that explanation.

“So, so obviously obviously that was a complete illusion stuff,” Antonius said.

However, the experience became an example of how prolonged variance can affect even players who have spent decades at the highest stakes. Antonius said he eventually stopped playing during the run.

Antonius Says His Best Poker Is Still Ahead

Mental resilience became one of the main themes of the conversation. Antonius argued that one of the hardest tests in poker comes when a player keeps making decisions after months of losing hands.

He said physical health plays a major role in his ability to do that. Antonius trains regularly and places considerable attention on sleep, diet and recovery.

His interest in health partly comes from his earlier sporting career. Antonius tried to pursue tennis professionally before injuries repeatedly interrupted his progress. Later genetic testing indicated that he had traits that made him more prone to tendon and disc problems.

Antonius also spoke about years of inflammation, low energy and brain fog before discovering a strong gluten intolerance. Changing his diet made a major difference for him.

“It’s always a good investment to invest on your health,” Antonius said.

For Antonius, that work also connects directly to poker. Sleep, exercise and physical condition affect concentration, recovery and the ability to keep making decisions when results go badly.

Despite playing professionally for more than 25 years, he does not believe his strongest period has passed.

I think honestly my best years are ahead in the way of my poker.

Bellande raised that point while discussing the fact that Antonius remains active in some of the biggest games despite now belonging to the Poker Hall of Fame.

Antonius said he still sees adapting to younger players and newer strategies as a challenge he enjoys. He also drew a distinction between understanding poker theory and performing when a real decision arrives.

A player can have access to excellent information, he argued, but still needs to choose the right bet size, call or fold in the moment.

Poker Hall Of Fame Recognition Meant More Than Antonius Expected

Antonius entered the Poker Hall of Fame in 2024 after decades in high-stakes cash games and tournament poker.

During the podcast, he admitted that the recognition affected him differently than he expected.

“Yeah, I felt felt very good,” Antonius said.

Reaching the Hall of Fame had never been a specific career target. Antonius said he assumed that if his results and reputation deserved a place, he would naturally get there eventually.

However, he did not enter during his first year of eligibility after turning 40.

That started to make him think about it more because so many players were asking why his name had not yet been added.

“I feel like there were like 50 players of good players telling me that how the how are you not in the hall of fame yet,” Antonius said.

Antonius also explained that recognition from fellow high-stakes professionals has always mattered more to him than wider public opinion.

“I really appreciate the way everyone respects me,” he said.

His career did not slow down after the induction either.

Bellande pointed to Antonius winning a Triton $200K event against an elite field after entering the Hall of Fame. Antonius said he remains one of the Hall of Fame players still competing regularly at the highest stakes.

That combination helps explain why he believes his best poker may still be ahead rather than behind.

Only Phil Ivey And Viktor Blom Really Impressed Antonius

Another revealing part of the conversation came when Antonius discussed watching elite players compete online.

Antonius said he had been in the room while roughly 20 to 30 players played online over the years, including many highly regarded professionals.

Only two really stood out to him.

Phil Ivey was one. Viktor Blom, better known online as Isildur1, was the other.

“It’s only Ivy and and uh Iseler who have impressed me,” Antonius said.

Antonius called Blom one of the most talented players he had faced. He remembered visiting him in London and watching him play online, adding that Blom could produce some of the best sessions Antonius had seen when he was playing well.

Their Full Tilt Poker battles became part of online poker history.

Antonius recalled playing four tables against Blom at once despite considering himself much less comfortable beyond two tables. He won around $3 million during one session against Blom, although he said he gave roughly $2 million back shortly afterwards.

Bellande and Antonius also revisited the famous pot between the two that became the largest online poker pot recorded at the time, worth around $1.3 million to $1.4 million.

Antonius initially thought he had lost when the final cards appeared before realizing the pot was moving in his direction.

Playing four tables at once did not suit his natural style, Antonius explained. He prefers changing speeds, trying different lines and reacting creatively to opponents. Multiple major decisions arriving at the same time made that much harder.

Antonius Says Respecting Opponents Matters

Respect also came up repeatedly during the discussion.

Antonius said players can damage their own game when they start believing an opponent always gets lucky against them or allow an ego battle to develop.

“It’s a dangerous thing to not respect your opponents. You’re going to play bad against them,” Antonius said.

He used fellow Finn Ilari Sahamies as an example.

Antonius remembered periods when Sahamies gave him considerable trouble online. Antonius felt Sahamies constantly ran well against him, while Sahamies also had the talent to take advantage.

Eventually, Antonius learned to separate those results from how he assessed another player.

He said he now has no bad blood with anyone in poker and prefers to treat competitors as players at the table and people away from it.

That approach also connects with how Antonius views bad runs. Every long-term player will eventually experience stretches where the cards seem impossible to overcome, he said.

The real test comes from continuing to play well while losing.

Antonius said one of the things he respects most in a player is the ability to maintain a strong game after a horrible run of cards.

Why Antonius Rarely Chased WSOP Bracelets

One unusual gap remains on the Antonius record.

He has never won a WSOP bracelet.

His explanation was simple. Antonius rarely dedicated much time to the WSOP tournament schedule because the summer cash games were too attractive.

Antonius said his last serious WSOP tournament run came in 2007, when he finished third in a Pot Limit Omaha event. Mixed cash games regularly pulled him away from tournaments after that.

“The mix games I’m I’m kind of addicted to the mix games,” he said.

Bellande suggested Antonius could dedicate an entire summer to tournaments as a challenge.

Antonius did not rule out the idea. He said a full WSOP schedule could become more interesting with a vlog, side bets and the chance to play against different people.

However, he also explained why cash games have always suited him better.

Tournament poker creates more pressure because elimination ends the session. Cash players with enough bankroll can continue playing.

Even a deep tournament run can leave a player disappointed when it ends short of first place.

At the same time, Antonius sees that pressure as part of the reason tournament poker remains so attractive.

“It’s the most amazing thing how you can turn small money to you know life-changing money,” he said.

From $200 Online To A Professional Career

Bellande also took Antonius back to the beginning of his poker career.

Antonius said he began playing professionally around the start of 2000.

He deposited $200 online and said the bankroll had grown to around $30,000 two months later.

Poker soon overtook his other plans.

Antonius later spent a semester in Virginia playing college tennis while already earning his living from poker. Rather than concentrating on completing a degree, he would take his laptop into evening computer classes and play online while other students studied.

He said he arrived with a bankroll of around $150,000 and left four months later with roughly $350,000 after winning another $200,000 online.

From there, Antonius flew directly to Las Vegas for the 2003 World Series of Poker and never returned to school.

Tennis had originally looked like the more likely professional career.

Antonius said he ranked among the better Finnish juniors before back problems interrupted his development. One doctor even told him he would never play tennis again, although better physical therapy eventually allowed him to return.

Those experiences partly explain why health now receives so much attention from Antonius.

Antonius Lost $100K Betting Phil Ivey On His Own Child

Bellande ended the interview by asking Antonius for the craziest or worst prop bet he could remember.

Antonius went back to around 2006 and a conversation with Phil Ivey in Bobby’s Room while Maya was pregnant.

Ivey asked Antonius whether he wanted to bet on whether the baby would be a boy or girl.

Ivey chose girl and proposed a $100,000 wager.

Antonius accepted.

Only afterwards did he start questioning why he had agreed to gamble on the gender of his own child when his only concern was that the baby was healthy.

“I just hope that my my daughter or son is healthy,” Antonius recalled.

Ivey kept the bet in place, and Antonius eventually lost the $100,000 wager.

Looking back, Antonius described accepting it as a stupid bet and one he regretted making.

The story provided a fitting end to an interview that showed a side of Antonius poker audiences have not always seen.

The quiet player from old television broadcasts has spent decades in some of the most competitive and expensive games ever played. Yet when given time to talk, Antonius had plenty to say about the players who impressed him, the losses that tested him, the health problems that changed his routine and the decisions that shaped his career.

More than 25 years after turning professional, he still speaks about poker as a game he is learning rather than one he has already solved.
