GambleAware funding ended on March 31 as Great Britain transferred gambling harm treatment, prevention and research to publicly commissioned services funded by the statutory levy.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Good to Know<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>GamCare reported \u00a319.9 million in income and \u00a314.8 million in expenditure.<\/li>\n<li>Total reserves increased 46.4% to almost \u00a316 million.<\/li>\n<li>NHS England now commissions gambling harm treatment in England through the statutory levy system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong>Reserves Rise Ahead Of Funding Uncertainty<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Total GamCare income fell only 2% to \u00a319.89 million, but the source of that money changed sharply.<\/p>\n<p>GambleAware service contracts and grants generated around 70% of income, compared with 55% a year earlier. That included \u00a31.9 million in final one off grants before GambleAware closed.<\/p>\n<p>Donations fell 44% to \u00a34.2 million after exceptional gifts boosted the prior year. GamCare also says the new public commissioning structure restricts future donations from gambling operators, reducing another source of flexible funding.<\/p>\n<p>Expenditure declined 7.7% to \u00a314.82 million, leaving net income of \u00a35.07 million. Total reserves consequently climbed from \u00a310.92 million to \u00a315.99 million.<\/p>\n<p>Trustees have designated \u00a32 million for digital development, while \u00a32.41 million remains restricted. General unrestricted reserves reached \u00a311.57 million.<\/p>\n<p>GamCare now targets operating reserves of between \u00a39 million and \u00a311 million. The charity says that buffer reflects uncertainty around future contracts, payment in arrears and planned technology investment.<\/p>\n<p>Funding visibility remains relatively short. Many contracts under the new system currently run for only one year, although some funding covers two years.<\/p>\n<p>NHS England took responsibility for gambling harm treatment commissioning in England from April 1, 2026. The wider statutory levy is expected to raise about \u00a3100 million annually, with 50% allocated to treatment, 30% to prevention and 20% to research.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Helpline Handles More Than 114,000 Contacts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>GamCare maintained large service volumes during the transition.<\/p>\n<p>The National Gambling Helpline and digital channels handled more than 114,000 contacts during 2025\/26, including over 48,800 through live chat and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>The Helpline made more than 11,400 referrals and directed another 17,700 people toward wider support.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment services worked with 2,811 clients across more than 10,300 sessions. Average waiting time for a full assessment stood at 2.4 days, well below the nine day commissioner expectation.<\/p>\n<p>Client outcomes also improved. Average Problem Gambling Severity Index scores fell from 14.4 at initial assessment to 3.3 at discharge, while average CORE 10 psychological distress scores declined from 14.0 to 6.3.<\/p>\n<p>GamCare chair Margot Daly said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Board\u2019s priority throughout was to keep the quality of services at the centre of every decision. Independent CQC assessments found GamCare\u2019s National Gambling Helpline, treatment and outreach services to be safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, with care focused on the needs and preferences of the people who use them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A Care Quality Commission assessment in January covered Helpline, treatment and outreach operations. GamCare says the assessment also confirmed that services operate independently from gambling industry influence.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wales Contract Ends Under New System<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The transition also changed where GamCare receives public contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioners did not renew GamCare Helpline services in Wales under the new arrangements. Calls from Wales can still reach the National Gambling Helpline, but commissioned GamCare delivery now covers England and Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>In England, GamCare retained the Helpline and secured treatment and outreach work across London, the East Midlands, South East, and Yorkshire and the Humber. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities also awarded more than \u00a34 million for outreach across those regions.<\/p>\n<p>GamCare also won funding covering the Highlands and Islands in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>The change comes as the wider treatment model could evolve again after April 2027.
