Alberta iGaming Corporation now wants to convert early operator interest into its main target, moving 75% of previously unregulated online play onto approved platforms within two years.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em><strong>Good to Know<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Alberta opened its competitive online gambling market on <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/alberta-online-betting-market-goes-live\/\">July 13, 2026<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Players now have 27 private operators plus Play Alberta.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>GGPoker has entered the registration pipeline and could become the first poker focused brand in the market.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong>Alberta Focuses on Channelization After Fast Operator Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alberta launched with 22 private sites. That total reached 27 within the first month, while more registered operators remain outside the live market. Around 50 entities had received AGLC registrations around launch, so further additions remain possible.<\/p>\n<p>AiGC CEO Dan Keene said industry support has \u201cexceeded\u201d his expectations.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis first month has been encouraging,\u201d<\/em> Keene said. <em>\u201cWe won\u2019t get everything perfect right away. But each step forward, no matter how small, will be taken with the utmost pride and intent, keeping the betterment of Alberta in mind \u2013 now and into the future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Operator numbers are only one part of the Alberta iGaming strategy. AiGC wants 75% of activity previously taking place with unregulated operators to enter the provincial system within two years. Before launch, estimates put roughly 70% of Alberta online gambling with operators outside provincial regulation.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re not here to grow iGaming in Alberta,\u201d<\/em> Keene said. <em>\u201cWe\u2019re here to provide protection for Albertans who choose to participate as a form of entertainment.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Alberta borrowed much of its framework from Ontario, but Keene has left room for future changes. AiGC can adjust areas such as player protection, advertising or other operating standards as it gains more market data.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur job is to conduct and manage a strong regulated market,\u201d<\/em> Keene said. <em>\u201cThe foundation has been laid. Now, we must uphold it and continually improve upon it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>GGPoker Adds a New Angle to Alberta Expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New registrations for Videoslots, Mr Vegas and GGPoker show that the operator pipeline remains active. Registration does not automatically allow a launch because each operator must also complete an agreement with AiGC.<\/p>\n<p>GGPoker carries extra relevance because Alberta still lacks a dedicated regulated online poker brand. However, provincial player location rules restrict the available poker pool, creating a tougher commercial model than online casino or sports betting.<\/p>\n<p>A Supreme Court of Canada case could eventually change that setup. The court will hear an appeal concerning international iGaming liquidity, with Alberta participating as an intervener. The case centres on whether a provincially conducted gambling system can allow Canadian players to compete against players outside Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario Court of Appeal ruled 4 to 1 in November 2025 that the proposed Ontario model could comply with the Criminal Code.
