Consumers would then agree not to collect the judgment directly from Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Any money recovered from developers would go to eligible class members. Amazon used in-app purchase records to calculate the $201 million figure, according to court documents filed in federal court in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>The structure gives players a route to pursue developers without requiring Amazon to place cash into a settlement fund. Amazon denied wrongdoing throughout the case.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, Steven Horn v. Amazon.com Inc, began in 2023. Plaintiffs accused Amazon of acting as an intermediary by distributing social casino apps and processing purchases of virtual currency.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that the arrangement violated Washington gambling law and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. Washington courts have previously treated some social casino products as illegal gambling because virtual chips can carry value by extending gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>Social casinos often offer free initial credits. However, users can buy more gold coins or similar currency after using those credits. Players can continue playing casino-style slots and table games, but they cannot normally exchange winnings for cash.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon said the settlement would let it<em> \u201ccontinue offering choice in our Appstore while requiring developers to make changes that improve the customer experience.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The company added that apps<em> \u201cmust comply with applicable laws, and we retain the ability to remove any app at any time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Social Casino Cases Have Returned More Than $650 Million<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lawyers for the plaintiff described the Amazon agreement as part of a wider legal campaign against social casino operators and the technology platforms that distribute their games.<\/p>\n<p>Previous settlements with social casino developers have returned more than $650 million to consumers across Washington and other states, according to the court filing. Parallel cases against Apple, Google and Meta remain pending, and all three companies deny wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has become a key venue for social casino litigation. A federal jury ordered High 5 Games to pay almost $25 million to Washington players in 2025, while an earlier DoubleDown Interactive and International Game Technology settlement reached $415 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Amazon proposal differs from a normal cash settlement. Class members first receive assigned legal rights and must then pursue money from the app developers.
