Parliament backed Anutin Charnvirakul with 293 votes, keeping him in power after the February election and strengthening his position against legal casinos.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em><strong>Good to Know<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Anutin won 293 votes in parliament, while People Party candidate Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut received 119.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Paetongtarn was removed from office in 2025 on ethics grounds tied to a leaked call with Hun Sen.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Anutin has said Thailand will need to \u201cwait for another prime minister\u201d for legal casinos, and he told Xi Jinping the plan was off the table while he remains in office.<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr>\n<h2>Casino Plan Loses Momentum Again<\/h2>\n<p>Paetongtarn and Thaksin Shinawatra had treated casino resorts as part of a wider tourism and investment plan. Their government wanted a first wave of five sites, with two in Bangkok and one each in Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. But that plan has now slipped even farther away after Anutin secured a fresh parliamentary mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Anutin took over on an interim basis in September 2025 after Paetongtarn was forced out. He later dissolved parliament, won the February 2026 election, and has now been returned through a formal parliamentary vote. AP reported that he is expected to be reappointed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn before a new cabinet is announced.<\/p>\n<h2>The Call That Changed the Direction<\/h2>\n<p>The political damage started with a leaked 17-minute phone call between Paetongtarn and Hun Sen after a deadly border clash between Thailand and Cambodia. In that call, she criticized her own military and addressed Hun Sen as \u201cuncle,\u201d comments that triggered public anger and deepened pressure on her government. He argued that legal gaming could hurt arrivals from China, which remains one of the most important tourism markets for Thailand. Bangkok Post reported that during APEC meetings in November 2025, Xi Jinping praised Anutin for not promoting casinos, and Anutin <a href=\"https:\/\/igaming.org\/casino-news\/anutin-confirms-thailand-will-not-legalize-casinos-after-talks-with-xi\/\">said<\/a> the policy would stay off the table under his leadership.<\/p>\n<p>So while supporters of the Integrated Entertainment Business Act had hoped a new government might bring the proposal back, that path now looks closed for the time being.
